Allison Leigh Schmidt

 In 1977 Allison left Wisconsin and headed west with a copy of Arizona Highways and some romantic notions about cowboys and Indians.  It was not long after crossing the Arizona border, that Allison found herself managing a trading post in Marble Canyon Arizona and the romantic notions became truth!

Needing a distraction from the long quite winters and living just a mile off the Navajo reservation, Allison had ready help learning the basics of smithing and practice taught her the rest. In 1986 Allison began to pursue smithing as something more than just a hobby. Today it's much more than that and it's also way more than making a living, It's her way of life.

 

In her own words

“People ask me where I get my ideas. It's more like my ideas get me!” The idea says NOW and if I stop whatever I'm doing and pay attention it's usually worth it. However this type of process is not always compatible with production, but my work is not only about production. It's about the way my art makes me feel, and ultimately it's about the way it makes you feel. If you own a piece of my jewelry and it's starting to look worn, then, I've succeeded.
